Here are some things I've been doing for the past few months: working six days a week, taking ibuprofen, sulking, baking, reading, petting cats, alienating my friends and acquaintances, and developing some truly awesome collarbones.

Today, though, I've mostly just been puking and napping on the couch. I'm better now, though. Mostly.

And now, a recipe for cupcakes!

AWESOMEST CUPCAKES EVER (they're accidentally vegan! great for when the milk's gone bad!)

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Get out your cupcake/muffin tin and put in paper liners, or rub the whole thing down with some oil if you're not feeling fancy. These WILL STICK if you do not grease the pan. This is a proven fact.

Next, mix these together in a big bowl. If the bowl happens to have a pouring spout, you win at life. If not, that's fine, too.
a cup and a half of flour (nothing fancy; I use store-brand unbleached white flour)
a cup of sugar (likewise)
a teaspoon of baking soda
a teaspoon of salt
one-third cup cocoa powder

These ingredients go in a separate bowl:
half a cup of vegetable oil (canola is great, olive is terrible, but anything yellow and cheap is fine. Melted butter, while excellent in most baked goods, is right out in this case.)
a cup of water
a teaspoon of vanilla extract (real vanilla! Not imitation! I love Nielsen-Massey! Worth every penny! Exclamation points!)
a tablespoon of vinegar (I use cider vinegar, but white will do in a pinch. What will not do: red wine vinegar, rice vinegar, anything herbed...do I even need to tell you this?)
(SECRET INGREDIENT ALERT!) a tablespoon or so of instant coffee granules, or just replace the water with a cup of cold brewed black coffee or espresso

Now, pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Too much mixing will make your cupcakes suck, and will decrease the exciting fizzing action besides. You may have noticed that the cupcake batter includes both baking soda and vinegar, just like the volcano science project you made in third grade.

Once you've finished enjoying your fizzy chococano, pour or spoon the batter into your pan, filling each cup about two-thirds full. Pop the pan into the oven and bake for about twenty minutes, until your cupcakes are fluffy and springy. When they cool, you can frost them if you like. I've had them with Funfetti, Nutella thinned with a little soy milk, and plain, and all three were just fine.

If there's one thing that having a double ear infection has taught me -- other than, say, how to know when I should go to the doctor right away because now I finally know what an ear infection feels like -- it's that I would definitely rather go blind than deaf. Even the perilous adventure of walking around without my glasses is much less freaky and isolating than going around with the relatively little hearing loss I have now that I'm almost all the way recovered.

This is all a long way of saying hey, middle ear, all is forgiven! Hack, choke, wheeze.
Worst ever: I'm on heavy antibiotics, so I can't even have a beer to distract me from The Phlegm Situation and my subsequent week-long deaf streak.
At least: I'm not contagious, and I have codeine cough syrup to keep me company. My doctor (actually, my regular GP's husband) hooked me up but good. He also totally understood when I told him that I'd reenacted the shower scene from the X-Files episode with Flukeman that morning..

I had really great plans for reconnecting with people and starting off 2006 on the right foot, but the past couple weeks have been miserable. It's impossible to feel less isolated when you can't even participate in a conversation because the ringing in your ears is so loud. Maybe I'll be able to get it all out of the way at once, and then I'll be happy and social and able to not alienate my friends and acquaintances for the rest of the year. (Next year, though? I have decided to become a hermit and not talk to or see anyone. NOT EVEN YOU.)

Dear everyone: I am moving! Two whole blocks, yes, but it still necessitates putting everything I own into boxes and then getting them up three floors. I donated a bunch of books to Goodwill and now I'm really cranky about it. They were crappy books, most of them obtained from various thrift stores in the first place, but they were mine.

I have some stuff that I don't want to move, but I don't want to throw out. Chief among them is a ton of musical theatre bootlegs and some related ephemera -- a few magazines, Playbills, videotapes, what have you. I really, really want them to have a good home, by which I mean "not a dumpster". I know I have some theatre nerds here. You probably won't want it, but can you point me in the direction of some people who would?

As if that weren't geeky enough, I still have some Star Trek collectible magazines and comics from about 10-15 years ago. I checked on EBay and they ain't worth shit. I'll mail those as a lot to anyone who wants them. As before, if you don't, maybe you know someone who does.

Third geekiest would have been a ton of Baby-Sitter's Club and Sweet Valley-type stuff, but they've all disappeared into the gaping maw of Goodwill. Anyone who likes that sort of thing can get everything they've ever wanted for twenty-five cents a book at Connecticut's fine secondhand establishments.

Hey, want to hear a funny story? Okay, so a week or so ago, I went to get an oil change. However, instead of changing my oil, the attendants lecture me about how I obviously have a MASSIVE OIL LEAK -- yes, in all caps. They tell me that they will not change the oil for me, as it will only make my problem worse. They scold me for having the temerity to drive my eleven-year-old Toyota to work and back every day, since it is obviously the place where 10W-30 goes to die, even though I've never smelled any oil or seen any suspicious puddles under my car. They tell me to get it fixed, and to make sure they don't try to scam me, a girl like you, it's easy to get ripped off.

Today, D. went to get my oil changed while I was at work. They tell him that the oil pan is seeping a little, but Toyotas do that after a while, and it's good that you got it in when you did, you know the oil's black.

And then my boss's boss tweaked my nose. The end.

Unpopular opinions:

First: Hooray! The evil people next door (yes, all approximately 38 of them) moved out! I sincerely hope they've jumped off a bridge en masse, like Disney wants you to think lemmings do.

Now we are doing all sorts of things that make us terrible neighbors, like playing music through the actual stereo after dinner and using a blender.

Second: I love Poddy and all, but iTunes has got to go. It's ugly, it takes about three seconds to scroll down after I click on the bar, and most importantly, it does not do what I want it to do in the way I want it to. HATE. Fortunately, I found an iPod plugin for Winamp, and I can skin it to look like a dungeon from The Legend of Zelda! Yeah!

Third: My car needs a new starter, or possibly a new ignition. Clearly, it is LiveJournal's duty to throw money at me to fix it. Oh, wait, that's only for people who want to go to rock shows but spent all their money on vodka and pills instead. Never mind!
